How to get your company to appear in ChatGPT and in AI answers

What a company can do to appear in ChatGPT and in Google's AI answers: crawlers, citable content, structured data and sources.

The short answer

There is no trick to appearing in ChatGPT. There are two conditions: the system must be able to read your site, and your site must be a source worth citing. That work is called GEO (generative engine optimization).

1. Let the right crawlers in

OpenAI documents several crawlers with different functions:

  • OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search. If you block it in your robots.txt, your site will not be shown in those answers (it could only appear as a navigational link). According to OpenAI, a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to take effect.
  • GPTBot is used to collect content that may be used to train models.

According to OpenAI, they are independent: you can allow OAI-SearchBot and block GPTBot if you do not want your content used for training. Check your robots.txt and the settings of your hosting or security provider, which sometimes blocks crawlers without warning.

2. Answer the question up front

AI systems cite passages that answer a specific question. Every important page should answer, in two or three lines, the main question it solves before going into detail. Generic copy (“we are leaders in innovative solutions”) answers nothing and does not get cited.

3. Make your information verifiable

  • Visible authorship. Who writes and what experience they have.
  • Dates. When it was published and when it was updated.
  • Sources. If you use figures, link to the origin.
  • Consistent contact and location details across the whole site.

4. Use structured data

Mark up with schema.org what your site already says: the organization, the services and the articles. Google makes clear that no special structured data is needed to appear in its AI answers; structured data is a general SEO best practice and must match the visible content of the page. It does not guarantee appearing in any system.

5. Do not forget Google

In its documentation on AI features, Google explains that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: the page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet in Search. The usual SEO best practices remain the foundation. In October 2026, Google announced more links inside those answers; we explain it in what changes for GEO with AI Mode and AI Overviews.

Checklist

  1. Does your robots.txt allow OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot?
  2. Does each key page answer its question in the first lines?
  3. Are author, date and sources visible?
  4. Does your structured data match what the page says?
  5. Do you have a single, clear page for each service?

Our take

Appearing in ChatGPT is the result of having a site that is clear, verifiable and easy to read for people and machines. It is the work we do in GEO and SEO. If you want to know how your site is doing, book your free assessment.
